Life at The Park School

International Students at The Park School of Buffalo

International students are a welcome addition to the Park School community. The School has a deliberately small and highly effective English Language Support (ELS) program that annually sponsors F1 visas for approximately 25 students to study in our upper school (grades 9 through 12). International students are enrolled in the same classes as American students. However, an International Studies Coordinator, who provides English language support as well as TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) preparation, guides them through their studies.

Preparation for University and Life Beyond

Park's International Student Program attracts students from around the world, most of whom attend The Park School for four years in preparation for University. This extended stay allows students to become part of the Park community and to gain mastery of both academic and colloquial English. One hundred percent of Park School graduates are accepted to college, including our international students, who leave our school with a well-developed understanding of American culture.

Academic Program

The International Student Program is designed to help international students be successful in their academic and social endeavors at the Park School of Buffalo. This program encompasses TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) as well as the School's college preparatory curriculum. Emphasis is placed on the development and refinement of academic skills in the English language, particularly reading and writing, to ensure that our international students' academic English skills are commensurate with their age and grade level. International students are expected to meet the same demands and expectations of all Park School students. They are required to take "Writing and Literature for International Students" and all other classes are upper school curriculum courses taken with their American peers. The Program ensures that our students have adequate academic support through midday and free period, as well as after school tutorials to assist them academically. Through our advisory program, students have help for any social or cultural issues they may encounter.

Over the years we have developed a very successful, rewarding, and academically challenging program for international students. One hundred percent of our graduating international students are accepted to college. Recent admissions have included:

Skidmore College
Emory University
Northeastern University
University of Illinois
UCLA
University of California at San Diego
Purdue University
SUNY at Buffalo
Ohio State University

Living in Buffalo

International students reside with host families in the Buffalo, New York area. Park matches International Students who are interested in studying at the School with a family who has expressed a desire to host them for the 10-month school term. These may be current Park School families, teachers or staff, or families with whom Park has developed a relationship. In some instances, the student has local family and chooses to stay with them.
